Abruzzo covers 10,794 square kilometers the majority of which (65.1%, 7,027 square kilometres) is mountainous, 34.9% is constituted by hills and has a population of 1,367,000 inhabitants.
The Eastern boundary of Abruzzo is its 130 kilometers long coastline along the Adriatic Sea.
In Abruzzo ancient tradition coexists happily with the liveliness and dynamism of its modern urban centers and its four provinces: L’Aquila, the regional capital and focus for the electronic and chemical-pharmaceutical industries; Chieti and Teramo, whose territories have the oldest industrial traditions and the highest concentration of small and medium sized companies, Pescara, an important commercial centre with a focus on the service sector.
Abruzzo will be one of the pilot project territories.
